Assignment 14- Words and Behavior

Read p. 1145.
Author's Purpose-This is an argumentative essay--the author wants to convince you.

1. Give examples of emotional appeal.
2.  Which of the following statements best summarizes the argument of Huxley's essay?
a.  The use of deceptive language allows people to disguise the fact that war and politics lead to murder, and cruelty.
b.  By using deceptive wording, we often think of war as disagreements between individuals.
c.   Language is a subject that is often not helpful during war.

3.  Paraphrasing-Put into your own words Huxley's distinction between the force used by the police and the force used during war.

Assignment 13- The Duchess and the Jeweller


Purple Book p. 1046
by Virginia Woolf- Virginia Woolf is known for writing about the inner thoughts of characters.
In this story, you will learn to make inferences.  Remember an inference is a logical guess.  The motivations of the story's main character are not openly stated--they are inferred.
1.  Have you every agreed to do something unpleasant in return for a favor or something that you really
didn't want to do?  What was the driving force or motivation that moved you to accept the bargain?
Looking back on the situation, do you think you made the right decision?  Explore your thoughts.

Example:  I needed furniture packed on a moving truck that I had rented.  It was too heavy for me to move the furniture and boxes.  I made a deal with a friend, that I would write a research paper for him if he would pack up the truck and unpack it at my new address.  This was a horrible decision.  It took him two hours and I could have paid  someone $10 or $15 an hour to do it--$30 at most.  Instead, it took me probably 20 hours to do his research paper and I hated every minute of it.

2. As you read the story, record the motivations for both the dutchess and the jeweller.  Keep in mind throughout the story what motivates each of them.
3.  Analyze the character of Oliver as a child and as an adult.  Write a paragraph explaining how Oliver changed as an adult and how he stayed the same.
4.  In literary criticismstream of consciousness is a narrative mode that seeks to portray an individual's point of view by giving the written equivalent of the character's thought processes, either in a loose interior monologue, or in connection to his or her actions.  What associations do the mention of Diana's name arouse in the jeweller?
5.  Pretend that you are a psychologist.  Write a report describing the forces motivating Oliver that conflict with his personality.
6.  Write a new ending for the story.

Assignment 12- The Rocking Horse Winner

What do you think of when you hear the word luck?  Are good luck and bad luck what they appear to be?

Assignment 11- A Cup of Tea

p.1034  Read the Build Background about British Society.
You will analyze plot in this story.  The opening paragraph will explain exposition (introduction of characters, setting, and theme).  1.  What are the details of exposition?  What elements of the opening paragraph shows that this story will be realistic?  What is the tone of the story?
2.  What does Rosemary's response to the shopkeeper's flattery reveal about her character?
3.  Multiple Meanings-  The homograph minute (referring to a measurement of time)  in the story the word minute (pronounced my noot) meaning very small.
4.  Why is this statement ironic? "Why should I be so  cruel?" p. 1038
5.  Why does Rosemary feel triumphant after she has "netted" the girl?
6.  What does Rosemary's fantasy of herself as a fairy godmother suggests?
7.  Why is it ironic that Rosemary calls the girl her friend?
8.  What is the climax or turning point of the story?
9.  Why is Rosemary surprised to hear what Philip says about the woman?
10.  What is the relationship between Philip and Rosemary?
11.  Imagine that,  Miss Smith wants to throw a party to introduce the woman to her rich friends.  Design an invitation for the party.

Assignment 10- The King i Dead, Long Live the King

p. 889

How do you think you are perceived by others?    This story is about situational irony.  This occurs when what happens to a  character is not what a character or reader expects.
1.  Find examples of situational irony.
2.  Think about the people in the room with the king.  Did anything happen that would foreshadow any events?
3.  This story has several elements of a folktale.  List them.
4.  Write a paragraph explaining what this story is about.

Assignment 9-Selected Poetry

William Blake was an artist, a poet, and a visionary.
A symbol is a person, place, object, or activity that stands for something beyond itself.  A heart, for example, is a symbol for love.
Read p. 710- The Lamb and p.712- The Tyger
1.  Compare the two poems.  How are they alike?  What is the tone?  What is the imagery? What is the symbolism of each poem?  Write a paragraph comparing the two and cite lines from the poems to support your answer.

2. Compare  To an Athlete Dying Young -p. 965 to One and Twenty p. 964.  These are two separate views on youth.  What was the advice of the wise man?  What is the advice in To an Athlete Dying Young?

3.  Read Do Not Go Gently Into the Good Night -1088  What are the images of nature in this poem? What does the speaker mean by "that good night"?  What does this poem mean to you?  Write a paragraph.

4. Go to wikipedia and  read the summary of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.  After reading the summary, go to page 765 and read lines 610-617.  How do these lines represent the moral of the poem?

Assignment 8-Letters

The popularity of letter writing during the 1700's resulted in collections of correspondence that have become an important part of English literary tradition.  Lord Chesterfield wrote letters every day for more than 30 years.
p.555 from Letters to his Son
Read the poem.  1.  What is your reaction to Chesterfield?
2. What attitudes and behavior seem to be the most important to Chesterfield?  Write a paragraph giving examples from  text and showing examples of parallelism.  Support Chesterfield's relationship with his son.  Support your ideas with evidence for the letter.

p.  559 Letter to her Daughter
Read Lady Mary Wortley Montagu's letter.  1.What generalizations can you make about 18th century views of education and marriage based on Lady Montagu's observations.  2.What is the tone of this letter?

3.  Write a letter to your child giving advice about the future.  If you do not have a child, write one for your future child.
